The office space renovation project of BHP's global headquarters in Melbourne was designed by Woods Bay. With a bold and innovative concept, it deeply integrates office furniture, customized DIY elements, and office environment design to create an office space that immerses itself in geological wonders.
The headquarters is located at 171 Collins Street, Melbourne, Australia, with an area of 6500 square meters. This renovation is the result of ten years of cooperation and trust between both parties, as well as an innovation in traditional office design. The design team focused on "boldness" and reduced the headquarters space from five floors to two and a half floors, while meeting all functional requirements and achieving efficient resource utilization.
Customize office furniture and reshape the office layout
In the application of office furniture, the design team fully leverages the advantages of customized DIY. Most of the existing office furniture has been preserved and relocated, giving it new functionality and meaning through clever layout planning. The characteristic metal mesh ceiling and central staircase of the public area have also been preserved, and the newly matched wooden pedals and handrails enhance the touch, complementing the overall spatial style.
In addition, the widely distributed "concave rooms" in the space not only serve as display areas for artworks and souvenirs, but also act as spatial landmarks, guiding people to experience the historical heritage of BHP Billiton in exploration. These customized office furniture designs not only embody the concept of sustainable development, but also create a unique office experience for employees.
Office environment design, incorporating geological elements
The core of office environment design lies in establishing a connection with the site. The design team extracted the local geological features of Melbourne and abstracted them into interior design textures and tones, making the interior space closely connected to the site environment. Local artists Scanlan and Makers have translated the land that nurtures minerals into hand drawn wall textures, while the metal oxidation process presents a blue-green toned space, making employees feel as if they are immersed in a geological wonder.
The winding flow diverges from the center of the site to the surrounding areas, creating an organic spatial form. The soft, simple, delicate and inclusive design style reflects BHP's respect for cultural diversity and inclusivity. The use of soft tones such as pink, blue, and green in the recreational space helps employees stabilize their minds; The communication area adopts bold and vivid color tones to stimulate creativity and vitality.
