The Amsterdam office of Dutch pension institution APG is an ideal workspace example built around furniture, environmental design, health, and biophilic concepts. This 16000 square meter office space located in the EDGE West Building, designed by Fokkema&Partners, aims to create a safe, vibrant, and highly recognizable environment for government agencies within large public buildings.

To establish a unique identity in the multi story shared circular building, the design team used APG corporate colors (blue, yellow, red) as the core and created eye-catching three-dimensional architectural installations on three balconies facing the large atrium. These 3D devices not only present dynamic visual effects from various angles, but also become focal areas for spatial transitions and gatherings, cleverly connecting public atriums and office floors, enhancing the recognizability of APG spaces.

Faced with the challenges of directional design for large atrium buildings, the plan responds by planning long and transparent visual corridors, differentiated zoning, and carefully considered color matching strategies: using warm colors to balance cool sunlight on the north side, and using cool colors to adjust warm lighting on the south side, naturally guiding the direction. The open layout and unobstructed facade maximize the introduction of natural light, combined with the open staircase connecting each floor, effectively promoting open collaboration.

Environmental design always puts employee health and well-being at the core. The project actively incorporates employee participation to jointly shape flexible and diverse furniture layouts and space types, supporting different work modes such as focus and collaboration. The biophilic design is deeply implemented, including a total of 125 square meters of green plant walls and artistic wall surfaces containing natural forms (such as butterfly) patterns, seamlessly integrating natural elements into daily life, enhancing psychological comfort and spatial vitality.

This case proves that even in large-scale complexes, through innovative environmental design, attention to health friendly biological details, and furniture and space strategies that support diverse work, it is entirely possible to create an ideal workplace that can attract employees back, promote interaction, and be full of personality and healthy vitality.
